Building Service Worker (Deep Nights) Illini Union
The scheduled work hours for this position are 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM (Central Time).
Job SummaryPerform custodial work required for the routine cleaning and upkeep of buildings. Perform set-ups and room turnovers for a variety of events. Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepares meeting rooms for daily events. This involves following instructions supplied by the Reservations Office for the correct room set-up; moving tables and chairs as necessary, supplying and setting up other equipment as needed.
- Maintains carpet floor coverings by providing all services required, operating automatic scrubbers and power sweepers used in connection with building cleaning and also providing operator type maintenance. Other floors must be kept free of dirt and debris by regularly scheduled mopping, sweeping, buffing, scrubbing or laying of finish as required.
- Collects and disposes wastepaper at designated areas. Debris removed from building must be collected and placed in containers for removal by truck. Empties recycle containers as directed.
- Responsible for cleaning of all offices, restrooms, lounges, common areas, hallways, stairwells, elevators and other usable areas of the Illini Union, using various methods as assigned. This may entail vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dusting, or wiping of all cleanable areas to include: vents, ledges, tables, furniture, counters, cabinets, light fixtures, water fountains, tile walls, and spot cleaning painted surfaces.
- Responsible for reporting needed repairs to appropriate personnel for action to be taken. Follows proper safety precautions when operating equipment. Empties and cleans all buckets and equipment when finished with an assignment. Keeps closets, carts and cleaning areas neat and orderly.
- Responsible for moving furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as requested and directed for various group activities, office, staff, and meetings. Responsible for unlocking and locking doors to building during hours of duty.
- Empties and cleans exterior smoking ash trays and trash cans within nearby vicinity of Illini Union.
- Washes all interior glass, including partitions, framed pictures, windows, and doors. Replaces and cleans light fixtures.
- Assist with removal of snow and ice from outside sidewalks and entrances as directed.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Position involves moving items weighing up to 50lbs.
- On occasion there may be weather conditions which cause uncomfortable temperature changes in/outside the Illini Union building.
- Employees may need to dispose of sharp objects, i.e. needles, etc., and could come into contact with blood-borne pathogens. Therefore, both training and inoculation opportunities are provided to employees in this position.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Janitorial experience
- Event setup experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Ability to read work orders and/or receive oral instructions and be able to carry out assignments given by a foreperson
Appointment InformationThis is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4502 - Building Service Worker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 3/1/2026.

Salary Information: This is a bargained position and as such, the hourly rate is driven by the collective bargaining agreement. The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $20.30/hour.

Fully Onsite position: This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.

Work Schedule: The scheduled work hours are as follows:
Position 1 Work Schedule: 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM with Monday and Tuesday off
Position 2 Work Schedule: 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM with Thursday and Friday off
