This exciting opportunity is for an experienced Capital Project Director to be a part our Global Engineering Team to lead the development of major capital projects in the Americas. This Capital Project Director will be based in our Gaithersburg, MD location.
The Project Director is accountable for the successful delivery of the project and responsible for ensuring that the business benefit is delivered. This means delivering the project safely and compliantly, to the agreed scope, in the agreed timescale, for the agreed cost budget and spending plan, applying the agreed resources and delivering to the predefined quality requirements. The Project Director acts directly on behalf of the sponsor to take forward the project scope and is the focal point for delivering customer needs. The Project Director manages the project team members, customers, and all external partners contributing to project's success to ensure that the requirements of all project stages are met in accordance with AstraZeneca Capital Project Delivery Process demonstrating the company leadership behaviors.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Initiate the project effectively, develop and obtain agreement on the project charter
- Develop the Project Management Plan, maintain it, communicate it and implement it effectively
- Ensure clarity of and communicate project roles and responsibilities
- Manage project risk pro-actively
- Ensure appropriate level of governance is in place
- Ensure project reporting and decision-making processes are robust and timely
- Actively identify all materials of project change, ensuring appropriate & timely assessment and review are performed.
- Obtain appropriate authorization for any changes in project scope. Own the Project Change Register
- Ensure the project schedule is meeting case timeline and own the plan-do-review process
- Govern the approved project budget and spending plan. Own the project cost review and reporting process
- Complete the plan through to H2 signoff, ensuring effective business participation (customer and key collaborators) throughout
- Review the project at key stages and communicate the lessons learned and good practices;
- Manage the handover process and close the project - successful Operational Performance Criteria, H1 and H2 signoff.
- Maintain relationships with key business partners to ensure business requirements are effectively delivered against project objectives,
- Lead supplier teams, communicating deliverables and responsibilities whilst encouraging collaboration amongst the team and business partners
- Ensure project documents are complete, up to date and stored appropriately
- Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment involving varying priorities and schedules
- Experience of working within a governance framework and matrix organization
Essential Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum 7+ years of experience
- Direct project experience in managing/leading capital investments for industrial scale pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- High levels of drive, energy and resilience with ability to take the initiative
- Ability to work well in diverse teams and proven aptitude to influence others to achieve positive outcomes
- Demonstrated work with engineering and/or project experience.
- Proven supervisory and technical skills.
- Demonstrated capability to manage projects in excess of $400M
Preferred Requirements:
- Demonstrated capability to manage projects in excess of $750M
- Experience applying modular design and construction techniques.
- Experience working in a Global company with team members and partners around the world.
- A project management qualification
- Master's degree in engineering management, technical management, or business administration.

The annual base pay for this position ranges from $160,559.20 - $240,838.80 USD Annual. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles), to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles), and commission payment eligibility (sales roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
