Join the Heart & Vascular team at University of Maryland Capital Region Health as a PRN Cardiac Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP). You'll work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team caring for cardiac surgery patients across the Cardiovascular ICU and Cardiovascular OR.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys caring for critically ill patients, and wants to remain hands-on in advanced cardiovascular care.

Your Role

The APP's primary responsibility will be supporting the Cardiac Surgery ICU, with training and opportunities to provide coverage across other areas of the Heart & Vascular team.

Working under physician direction and within the provider's delegation agreement, you will:

  • Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive care to critically ill cardiac surgery patients.
  • Obtain medical histories, perform examinations, participate in daily rounds, order and interpret diagnostic testing, develop initial diagnoses, and initiate treatment plans.
  • Collaborate closely with attending physicians, consulting teams, nursing staff, fellow APPs, patients, and families.
  • Assist with preoperative and postoperative planning, care, and documentation.
  • Educate and counsel patients and families throughout the surgical care experience.
  • Demonstrate competency in required cardiac surgery procedures and subspecialty care.
  • Promote exceptional quality, safety, and patient outcomes as part of our High Reliability Organization.
  • Participate in APP Council meetings, Heart & Vascular Institute team meetings, educational opportunities, and other professional development activities.
  • Contribute to APP leadership through committees, peer education, training, and team initiatives.

For APPs Interested in the CV OR

Depending on experience and departmental needs, opportunities may include first assisting in the Cardiovascular OR and performing skills such as:

  • Tissue handling, incision, retraction, dissection, ligation, stapling, suturing, and hemostasis
  • Chest tube insertion and closure of leg and chest incisions
  • Preparation and loading of vein for proximal anastomosis using an Aortic Connector System
  • Endoscopic or open radial artery harvesting during coronary artery bypass procedures
  • Preparation of the radial artery for bypass


Qualifications

Physician Assistants

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current NCCPA certification.
  • Active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Nurse Practitioners

  • Bachelor's degree and previous RN experience.
  • Completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Experience

  • Five years of experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner providing direct patient care, preferably within a surgical program, is preferred.
  • New graduate NPs with five years of RN experience in a Cardiac Surgery ICU will also be considered.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Credentialing through UM Capital Region Health's Medical Staff Office is required.
