The Environmental Field Technician will support drinking water compliance and monitoring programs at U.S. military installations throughout the state of Maine. This position is responsible for collecting drinking water samples in accordance with federal, state, and Department of Defense (DoD) requirements and ensuring proper documentation, chain-of-custody, and coordination with laboratories and installation personnel. The role requires prior field sampling experience and a strong technical foundation in environmental sciences or engineering.

This position will require frequent travel throughout the state of Maine.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties, but not all duties performed for this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Collect drinking water samples from potable water systems in accordance with applicable regulatory and project-specific requirements (e.g., EPA Safe Drinking Water Act protocols, state of Maine requirements, and DoD guidance).
  • Perform field activities at military installations, including coordination with installation staff to access water treatment facilities, distribution systems, and sampling points.
  • Prepare, label, preserve, and package samples; complete chain-of-custody forms; and ensure timely shipment to accredited laboratories.
  • Follow approved work plans, sampling and analysis plans (SAPs), and quality assurance project plans (QAPPs).
  • Maintain accurate field documentation, including field logs, sample inventories, and photo documentation as required.
  • Comply with all health and safety requirements, including site-specific safety plans and DoD installation procedures.
  • Assist with basic field measurements (e.g., pH, temperature, conductivity) as required by the sampling program.
  • Communicate field status, observations, and any issues to the Project Manager or Field Lead.

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related science or engineering discipline.
  • Prior experience collecting environmental samples, with direct experience in drinking water or potable water sampling strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with sampling procedures, chain-of-custody requirements, and standard field documentation practices.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and follow detailed technical instructions and protocols.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to multiple military installations within Maine.
  • Ability to obtain installation access credentials and comply with federal background requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working on military installations or federal facilities.
  • Familiarity with Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) compliance sampling.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience working under approved QAPPs or SAPs.

Additional Qualifying Factors:

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening (post accepted offer) and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain

Necessary Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to maneuver around work sites, see, hear, and verbally communicate with co-workers and clients. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, climbing stairs, ladders or staging, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; frequent opportunity to move about and to work outside the office environment for extended periods involving exposure to the elements with weather that will include extreme heat, cold, wind, rain or other inclement weather, walking over rough and uneven surfaces, and routine lifting of up to approximately 40 pounds. If required, must properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times including but not limited to: hard hats, steel toed boots, eye protection, respiratory protection, and hearing protection. Must always maintain a constant state of mental alertness.

Working Conditions

Job is performed in a combination of office and outdoor site locations. The office setting includes exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse. Outdoor settings include walking, driving, and carrying supplies throughout all seasons with exposure to heat and cold conditions, and potentially wildlife. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and loud noise.
