This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work. You won't just be sitting in meetings and shadowing all summer; you'll be actively contributing and doing the same work as other FirstEnergy employees on your team. You'll receive on-the-job training and challenging assignments. You will also be assigned a Supervisor, a Coach/Mentor and a dedicated IT Intern Program Coordinator to help you maximize your learning and growth throughout your summer... and beyond. Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time, paid opportunities spanning 14 weeks. You must be actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.

About the Geospatial Technology Analyst

The Geospatial Technology Analyst works with a team of analysts, administrators and architects in support of all things Geospatial related to Distribution (Dx), Transmission (Tx) and Vegetation Management (VMS) and other related applications. These systems empower designers, mappers, & third-party contractors for safe and reliable energy delivery. Team members apply software, hardware, networking, and/or engineering principles to support FirstEnergy's environment. The work focuses on maintaining a system architecture that meets the end-user requirements, while maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Note: This opportunity is on-site and will work in-person four days/week. Position may be filled at Akron, OH; Greensburg, PA; Reading, PA; or Fairmont, WV locations.

Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of an Geospatial Technology Analyst:

  • Understanding the business functions to provide optimal solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective.
  • Managing the testing and deployment of patches and software upgrades.
  • Maintaining integrations and interfaces between FirstEnergy systems
  • Performing system security administration tasks
  • Supporting GSI DDS & ESRI ArcGIS for Designing and Mapping interfaces
  • Supporting data extraction and transformation through the FME Workbench and Python scripts
  • Developing data queries and extracts to meet customer requirements built on Oracle DB and Microsoft SQL Server Technologies
  • Developing a solid understanding of processes in the FirstEnergy Operational Technology line of business, keeping up with developments in the electric utility industry at large, and being able to speak the language of the business.
Applicant Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering or other technology related disciplines
  • Class Standing - Rising Junior or Rising Senior
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
Preferred Skills/Experience
  • Basic understanding of, or experience with, any kind of coding or scripting language (e.g. Perl, Python, Java, C#, PowerShell, SQL etc.)
  • Experience with relational databases, including architecture, design, and reading and revising data through software applications
  • Experience supporting software solutions
  • Experience troubleshooting personal devices, such as laptops or tablets
  • Familiarity with server administration and support
  • High Level understanding of Windows Server, Windows PC, and UNIX/Linux operating systems and system administration fundamentals

  • Highly motivated to work independently, utilizing virtual technologies, and learn concepts quickly
  • Must be organized and work well with priority changes
  • Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls
