To cover LOA from July-September
The Hospital-Based Substitute Teacher provides academic instruction, manages the classroom environment, and promotes learning for adolescent patients in both inpatient and day hospital programs in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The role ensures continuity of educational services by following and maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment tailored to the needs of medically complex students.

The Hospital-Based Substitute Teacher plays a crucial role in ensuring young patients at Shepherd Center do not fall behind in school by teaching core subjects to keep the student on track. The hospital-based substitute teacher may also provide consultation and resources for those students that may not be ready for academic reintegration such as guidance and information for medical withdrawals from school and information about education laws / student rights.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach, guide, and instruct patients/students in individual or group settings and communicate from a developmentally appropriate perspective.
  • Demonstrate openness to learning and using access technology to support adaptive classroom needs for adolescent patients with limited mobility or other accommodation needs.
  • Document contractual agreements between Shepherd School and school systems and process billings per contract.
  • Document transcripts of work (academic and therapy) forwards to schools.
  • Deliver instructional activities and create lesson plans based on students' academic needs
  • Take attendance and complete all required classroom documentation.
  • Teach and facilitate learning in English, math, or history across multiple grade levels, from middle school through high school.
  • Communicate effectively with school and program staff regarding student progress, completed work, issues, or notable behaviors.
  • Protect the privacy, confidentiality, and rights of all students at all times.
  • Practice proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Report employee, patient, or visitor injuries, accidents, or safety concerns to the supervisor and in the occurrence reporting system.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies related to classroom operations.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team (including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and counseling) to ensure positioning, access, emotional needs, and learning styles are appropriately considered in instructional delivery.
  • Lead return to school calls with the adolescent's school system and the adolescents Shepherd rehabilitation team
  • Enter designated information into the Electronic Medical Record as needed and after training.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic technology (i.e. iPads, Microsoft Office products)
  • Demonstrate knowledge or be willing to learn about various academic subscriptions (i.e. DeltaMath, Equatio, KiwiWrite, GoodNotes)
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or associate/bachelor's degree (requirements may vary by district).
REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION:
  • BLS (Basic Life Support Instructor) certification
REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
  • Completion of district or state substitute teacher training (if required).
REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS:
  • Effective communication and classroom management skills.
  • Dependability, professionalism, and flexibility.
  • Effective time management skills .
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent computer skills such as having knowledge of Kiwi Write, IXL, Magic School, and Delta Math .
  • Proficient with Microsoft office products.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Georgia Educator Certificate Type T (Teacher) in a secondary (grades 7-12) field.
  • Preference for Special Education, Orthopedic- ally Handicapped and/or Learning Disabilities certification.
  • Special Education experience, preference for Hospital/Homebound, Orthopedic ally Handicapped, Learning Disabilities and/or Brain Injury experience.
  • Experience / knowledge with 504 / IEP accommodations preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Uses body, tools, or adaptive devices to safely guide or assist patients, applying judgment regarding appropriate methods and tools.
  • Ability to exert up to 15 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Some potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Work performed in a classroom located within a clinical or rehabilitation setting with medically complex adolescents.
