Department Information

The Judson Mead Geologic Field Station (IUGFS) is a unique Indiana University facility located in Montana and operated by the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) for one of the nation's top ranked field geology programs. The facility includes state of the art classroom building, faculty housing units, kitchen and cafeteria facilities, student dorm rooms, accessory buildings and a resident caretaker house. The Field Station and EAS strives to lead the nation in:

  • Teaching geosciences in the field.
  • Field-based geoscience research, both for new knowledge about the geology of SW Montana and better ways to teach geosciences in the field.
  • Development of best practices in field geosciences.
The Station is located at 633 South Boulder Road in the Tobacco Root Mountains just south of Cardwell, Montana near Yellowstone National Park, Lewis and Clark Caverns and the Butte-Anaconda mining district. We offer a world-class facility located in some of the most diverse and complex geology in North America. During the summer months the facility is an active teaching campus with up to 100 students, faculty and staff on-site. In the off-season it is used by outside groups and the winter is an active time for maintenance and improvements.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • 12 month position. Lives on site at the IU Geologic Field Station in Montana and maintains buildings and property operations and functions, including annual maintenance planning, security/access control, and emergency response.
  • Coordinates fire and life safety, environmental safety procedures, and planning with university and department personnel and external agencies.
  • Carries out regular cleaning and maintenance, performs unspecialized tasks as needed, including repairs and small construction projects.
  • Works with non-exempt Licensed and Skilled Trades staff and IU facilities staff to carry out specialized or large repair, maintenance, and construction projects.
General Responsibilities
  • Maintains building operations and maintenance such as maintenance planning, security/access control, and emergency response. Coordinates fire and life safety, environmental safety procedures, and planning with university personnel and external agencies where required.
  • Performs periodic scheduled and ad hoc inspections to identify cleaning and property maintenance needs.
  • Prepares estimates for repairs and ensures building maintenance falls within allocated budget with an emphasis on cost-containment.
  • Participates in all aspects of project development, budget, implementation, and completion.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation to cover emergency situations.
  • Coordinates fulfillment of work orders for corrective action and routine maintenance; monitors progress, escalating complex matters as needed.
  • May provide guidance to non-exempt Licensed and Skilled Trades staff.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in facilities management, project management, business operations, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
