Position Description:

This is a position with the Prototype and Manufacturing Division (PMD) machine shop at NAVAIR Lakehurst. The Prototype and Manufacturing Division provides critical hardware to the fleet. We overhaul arresting engines and launch valves and are the sole source of supply for the cables used for aircraft arrestment (i.e., purchase cables and cross deck pendants), we manufacture hardware in response to fleet emergencies, and we manufacture a wide range of support equipment and test this equipment appropriately. We are the sole source of supply and last source of supply for critical hardware that is essential to Navy Fleet operations.

PMD produces a large range of machined components from small components approximately one inch in size to large frames and equipment bases that are over 30 feet long. This particular position would involve the operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and various electric and pneumatic hand tools.

The Junior Machinist sets up and operates a variety of manual machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. This position will use manual machine tools (e.g., jig borer, grinding machine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for both products and items for use as jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds. Work typically involves planning and performing difficult machining operations which require complicated setups or a high degree of accuracy, setting up machine tool or tools (e.g., installing cutting tools and adjusting guides, stops, working tables, and other controls to handle the size of stock to be machined; determining proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence or selecting those prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts); using a variety of precision measuring instruments

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and co-workers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of two (2) years' relevant experience with CNC set-up and operation at a level that would be obtained working in a machine shop and/or through a vocational school program.

Strong understanding of Fanuc control systems

Understanding and programming skills of MasterCam

Ability to read and interpret drawings and prints

Ability to operate equipment based on oral instructions

Ability to use basic measuring tools to confirm work piece dimensions

Sufficient math skills to calculate distances, angles, take-offs, etc.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
