Job Summary
Indiana University (IU) Columbus is seeking an energetic and dedicated Part-Time Assistant Cross Country Coach to support the development and competitive success of the men's and women's cross-country programs. A person in this role should be passionate about distance running, committed to supporting student athletes through training and competition, and eager to contribute to a positive and growth oriented team culture both on and off the course.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Assists the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting team practices and training sessions.
- Supports athlete development, including technique work, conditioning, race strategy, and overall performance improvement.
- Provides meet day assistance such as course setup, logistics coordination, athlete preparation, race management support, and post race duties.
- Participates in recruiting efforts, including communication with prospective student athletes, talent evaluation, and facilitation of campus visits.
- Maintains consistent communication with student athletes, athletics staff, and campus partners.
- Assists with administrative tasks such as scheduling, travel planning, equipment inventory, and program documentation.
- Promotes a team culture rooted in academic success, personal development, integrity, and sportsmanship.
- Ensures compliance with all Indiana University, conference, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) rules and expectations.
- Supports fundraising initiatives and community engagement efforts for the cross-country program.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support program operations and the mission of IU Columbus Athletics.
- Meets the needs of a competition based schedule, including practices, meets, and recruiting activities.
- Ensures capability to support athletes in various practice, training, and competition settings while maintaining compliance with university and legal requirements.
- Ensures the ability to respond effectively to injuries or emergencies during practices, competitions, and team travel.
QualificationsEDUCATION
Required - High school diploma or equivalent (HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required - Demonstrates foundational education necessary to perform general coaching, communication, and administrative responsibilities.
Preferred - Coaching experience or a background in competitive running; college level experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required - CPR/AED and First Aid certification
- Valid driver¿s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
SKILLS
Required - Knowledge of training methods and race strategy
- Understanding of endurance training principles, race tactics, pacing, injury prevention, and athlete progression in a cross country environment.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Ability to guide student athletes, collaborate with coaching staff, communicate expectations clearly, and manage multiple responsibilities such as scheduling, logistics, and athlete outreach.
Preferred
- Proficient knowledge of the demands of endurance athletes and the strategies used at higher levels of competition.
- Experience working with teams or individual runners helps ensure effective coaching, mentorship, and athlete development
Working Conditions / DemandsThis position requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and occasional travel as required. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
This position requires the ability to transport student athletes, equipment, or staff to practices, meets, or off campus training locations.

Advertised Salary$17.00 per hour
Work HoursUp to 29 hours per week (will not exceed 29 hours).
