Housing Operations supports the on-campus housing and dining for over 12,000 students. We strive to create life-changing experiences by building relationships, developing others, and creating a sense of belonging for our students, their families, and the Indiana University (IU) community.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, operates sewing machines and other equipment to trim, serge, press, hem, line, and pleat fabric.
- Performs duties related to the fabrication, repair and maintenance of custom soft window treatments, as well as repair and maintenance of hard window treatments for residence halls, offices, classrooms, dining facilities, and other University properties.
- Refers to and uses patterns, templates, sketches, or blueprints.
- Sews replacement parts or missing stitches, according to repair tickets.
- Selects supplies such as fasteners and thread, according to specifications or characteristics of fabric.
- Observes sewing machine operation to detect defects in stitching or machine malfunction, and notifies supervisor.
- Replaces sewing machine parts and performs basic maintenance, such as oiling machine.
- Sews materials by hand, using needle and thread.
- Irons or presses fabric for sewing.
QualificationsEDUCATION
Required- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required- 1 year of experience in a related field.

Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about in the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, and the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to move objects up to 30 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels.

This is an in-person position.
Advertised Salary$13.25 per hour
Work HoursMonday - Friday
This position is capped at 29 hours per week.
