Position Description

Job Summary:

The Project Engineer will support the execution of complex heavy civil infrastructure projects within Penhall Company's Major Projects group. This role assists in managing field operations, tracking costs, coordinating schedules, and maintaining project documentation. The Project Engineer serves as a key liaison between field teams, project management, and client stakeholders to help ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning and execution of large-scale construction projects using sound project management principles and methodologies.
  • Assist with daily field operations, including coordination of labor, equipment, and production tracking.
  • Develop a strong understanding of project plans, specifications, and subcontract requirements to support execution.
  • Track production, costs, and manhours against budget; assist with job cost reporting, forecasting, and cost-to-complete projections.
  • Support scheduling efforts, including development of project schedules and short-term lookaheads; coordinate sequencing with field teams and general contractors.
  • Identify field issues, risks, and inefficiencies; assist in developing and implementing solutions.
  • Assist with contract administration, including review of contract documents, RFIs, change orders, and delay notices.
  • Maintain accurate and organized project documentation, including drawings, submittals, RFIs, and daily reports.
  • Ensure field teams are working from current document revisions and maintain version control.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including estimating, safety, and equipment to support project success.
  • Promote and support a strong safety culture; ensure compliance with all project-specific safety and environmental requirements.


Position Requirements

Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in heavy civil, infrastructure, demolition, or concrete-related construction environments preferred.
  • Understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Knowledge of cost tracking, job costing, and project reporting.
  • Experience supporting scheduling and field coordination efforts.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with construction management software is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, field-driven environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with field crews, management, and clients.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent field experience).
  • 2-6+ years of experience in construction, preferably in heavy civil, infrastructure, or self-perform environments.
  • Experience supporting field operations, cost tracking, and project coordination.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to walk job sites and navigate active construction environments.
  • May be required to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Ability to travel and work on project sites nationwide as needed.
