Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is seeking a Rating & Underwriting Analyst to help safeguard the financial health of the company through risk evaluation and sound business recommendations. In this role, you will calculate renewal rates and settlements, analyze projected financial impacts, and ensure the accuracy and quality of rate releases. You'll prepare ERISA reports, create customer quotes using demographic and claims data, and review participation levels, contribution methodologies, and industry classifications.
Supporting more senior analysts, you'll help explain rate changes to stakeholders-such as customers, sales teams, agents, consultants, and employer groups. You'll apply underwriting and rating policies when reviewing exception requests and prepare recommendations for leaders, considering both financial and operational impacts. Additional tasks may be assigned to support team goals.
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field; experience or internships in accounting, financial analysis, or underwriting is a plus. Strong skills in financial analysis, mathematics, and report preparation are essential, along with effective communication and organizational abilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required; experience with MS Access, Visual Basic, rating systems, and SQL, Python, or R is preferred but not mandatory. Familiarity with sales distribution channels and healthcare laws and regulations (HMO, PPO, ACO, etc.) is a plus.
