Position Overview:

The Risk Analyst supports Motiva's Middle Office by delivering accurate daily exposure reporting, validating P&L, ensuring data integrity, and maintaining a robust control environment. This role reports directly to the Manager of Risk Management and safeguards the integrity of commercial activity through precise measurement, adherence to established risk policies, and clear documentation. The analyst partners closely with peers across Scheduling, Optimization, Commercial, Finance, and IT to resolve discrepancies and uphold high-quality reporting.

This is an on-site position with hybrid flexibility, located at Motiva's downtown Houston corporate headquarters. and operates on a 9/80 work schedule, providing alternating Fridays off to support work-life balance

Responsibilities:

  • Validate and publish daily exposure and deals pricing; work with Commercial to reconcile unexpected variances.
  • Perform daily P&L checks and investigate or reconcile variances with Commercial and Finance.
  • Support UAT testing for system, reporting, and control enhancements.
  • Operate as an independent Middle Office control function, ensuring compliance with Risk policies, segregation-of-duties standards, and the risk control framework.
  • Record and escalate Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), business incidents, and documented exceptions in accordance with policy.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and support governance reviews and month-end financial integrity activities.
  • Partner with Supply Optimization to confirm inventory movements, pricing details, and supporting data quality.
  • Provide ad hoc analysis and reporting for Middle Office leadership and commercial teams.
  • Collaborate with Commercial, Finance, and IT to resolve discrepancies, enhance reporting (e.g., Power BI, datamarts), and support operational efficiencies.
  • Assist with updates to policies, standards, continuous-improvement initiatives, and onboarding of new commercial activities.
  • Support UAT testing for system, reporting, and control enhancements.

Experience and Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, or related quantitative discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in market risk, middle office, or commodity analytics.
  • Intermediate proficiency with ETRM systems (RightAngle preferred) and analytical tools (Power BI, advanced Excel).
  • Understanding of commodity markets, including physical/financial instruments (forwards, futures, swaps, options), exposure decomposition, position limits, and DOA.
  • Experience with one or more commodities: Crude, Intermediates, Products, Renewables, Petrochemicals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to communicate clearly and work both independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Experience in refining or broader exposure to the full lifecycle of commodity transactions.
  • Working knowledge of crude, fuel oil, and refined product markets, including pricing and market structure.
  • Familiarity with exposure decomposition, P&L attribution, and market-based pricing/trading dynamics.
