Safety Specialist
SAFETY & EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT (Billings Clinic Main Campus)

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)
Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours every two weeks (Exempt)
Starting Wage DOE: $32.06 - $40.07

The Safety Specialist serves as a critical resource by supporting the growth and advancement of organizational safety programs. This role provides program oversight, project management expertise, and coordination of system-level initiatives. The incumbent ensures compliance with regulatory requirements while also resourcing special projects that enhance patient and employee safety, advance clinical excellence, and strengthen integration efforts across the system.

Essential Job Functions

• Program Oversight & Project Management
Provides oversight and coordination of safety-related initiatives, including program development, implementation, and evaluation for the growing Trauma program and Trauma I redesignation.
Serves as a project manager for cross-functional initiatives, ensuring deliverables, timelines, and resources are aligned with organizational priorities.
Coordinates system-wide projects between Logan Health and Billings Clinic to promote consistency, safety, and regulatory readiness.

• Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation
Conducts scheduled and unscheduled safety rounds across all facilities, identifying opportunities for improvement and ensuring adherence to internal and external safety standards (e.g., OSHA, CMS, NFPA, Joint Commission).
Prepares documentation, reports, and presentations for the Safety Administrator, Trauma leadership, Safety Board, and other governing committees regarding compliance and program progress.
Supports Trauma I redesignation surveys, documentation, and ongoing readiness activities.

• Training, Education & Communication
Develops and delivers training and educational programs to staff and leaders on safety, environmental management, and project-related initiatives, with a focus on Trauma program readiness and system-wide integration.
Acts as a resource to leaders and teams by providing guidance, tools, and subject matter expertise for effective implementation of safety practices.
Facilitates communication and collaboration across departments and facilities, ensuring shared understanding of project goals and outcomes.

• Data Collection, Analysis & Reporting
Collects, interprets, and reports safety and program-related data to monitor compliance, identify trends, and support decision-making.
Assists with performance measurement, benchmarking, and continuous improvement processes related to safety and Trauma program initiatives.
Partners with Data Analysts and leadership to prepare survey readiness reports and track progress on system-wide projects.

• Leadership & Collaboration
Serves on Trauma program, safety, and system-integration committees, contributing expertise and representing the department's goals.
Collaborates with leaders across Billings Clinic and Logan Health to prioritize, resource, and implement projects that support organizational growth and compliance.
Provides consultation and support to leaders in identifying risks, developing solutions, and implementing process improvements.

• General Responsibilities
Maintains professional competency and up-to-date knowledge of Trauma program standards, safety regulations, and project management best practices.
Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic's mission, vision, values, and Code of Conduct.
Performs other duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the department, Trauma program, and system-wide initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications


Education
• BS / MS in Environmental Health and Safety; MS in Industrial Hygiene or equivalent and/or Certified Safety Professional credentials.
• NFPA Life Safety Code residency courses for NFPA 99 and 101 with twelve (12) months of employment.

Experience
• Three (3) years experience in environmental safety and health standards, codes, and concepts (OSHA 10-hour, Fire / Life Safety Code, 40-hour HazWOPER)
• Two (2) years experience in NFPA Life Safety Codes 99 and 101
• One (1) Demonstrated experience with group interaction and adult teaching

Certifications and Licenses
• OSHA 10-hour 500/501 and 40-hour HazWOPER. Within 1 year of hire
• Certified Safety Professional OR Certified Healthcare Safety Professional Associate level completed within three (3) years of employment. Full certification within seven (7) years of employment.
• Current Montana Driver's License and ability to be insured to operate Billings Clinic vehicles

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Employees that require a licensed or certification must be properly licensed/certified and the licensure/certification must be in good standing.
