JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Preventive Maintenance Specialist serves as the site's senior technical authority and maintenance leader responsible for the reliability, safety, and long-term performance of asphalt production assets. This role provides strategic oversight of plant mechanical integrity, champions preventative and predictive maintenance practices, and drives continuous improvement to maximize uptime, production efficiency, and asset longevity.
In addition to technical leadership, this position is accountable for training, coaching, and developing maintenance personnel, ensuring consistent execution of best practices across all shifts. Acting as a trusted partner to plant leadership, the Sr. Preventive Maintenance Specialist sets maintenance standards, builds technical capability within the team, and fosters a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the lead technical authority for asphalt plant equipment, including drum dryers, conveyors, elevators, screens, baghouses, and auxiliary systems.
- Lead and oversee the execution and continuous improvement of the preventative maintenance program, ensuring work is planned, prioritized, and completed to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Direct and validate complex mechanical repairs involving gearboxes, bearings, shafts, pulleys, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Analyze plant performance, equipment condition, and failure trends to drive proactive corrective actions and improve throughput and reliability.
- Establish standards for expert welding and fabrication (Arc/MIG/TIG), providing oversight for structural repairs, reinforcing equipment, and plant modifications.
- Own lubrication, wear-life monitoring, and component replacement strategies to prevent premature equipment failure.
- Ensure emissions control systems are maintained and performing in compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with the Plant Manager to prioritize and manage the maintenance backlog, balancing production demands with long-term asset health.
- Coordinate maintenance activities to align with production schedules, shutdowns, and capital improvement initiatives.
- Oversee daily OSHA pre-shift inspections and ensure hazards, deficiencies, or mechanical risks are promptly addressed.
- Ensure maintenance documentation, CMMS entries, inventory tracking, and regulatory paperwork are accurate and completed in accordance with company standards.
- Establish expectations for shop organization, tool control, housekeeping, and worksite cleanliness.
- Lead training and coaching efforts for maintenance personnel, providing hands-on instruction, technical guidance, and real-time feedback.
- Act as a mentor and subject-matter expert, developing technicians through structured knowledge transfer, job shadowing, troubleshooting support, and skills reinforcement.
- Set and reinforce standard maintenance practices, ensuring consistency, craftsmanship, and safety across all shifts and work executed.
- Support onboarding and qualification of new maintenance employees by delivering equipment-specific training and safety reinforcement.
- Identify skill gaps within the maintenance team and proactively support development plans in partnership with plant leadership.
- Promote a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement by modeling best practices and safety leadership.
- Support succession planning by developing depth of technical expertise within the maintenance organization.
- Champion a "Safety First" culture, ensuring all maintenance activities are executed safely and in compliance with OSHA and company policies.
- Lead by example in safe work behaviors, technical excellence, and professionalism.
- Ensure maintenance personnel are properly trained and qualified to operate support equipment, including loaders, skid steers, man-lifts, and cranes.
QUALIFICATIONSEducationHigh School diploma, GED, or relevant experience
Work Experience10+ years of experience (preferably 15+ years) in heavy-duty industrial maintenance and operations of HMA plants.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesEquipment analysis and general repair concepts with HMA plants, RAP processing, andamp; rubber plants.
Running and maintaining different burners at the HMA plants (i.e. Astec, Gencor, and Hauck)
Understanding different control systems with many different OEM HMA plants (Astec, Gencor WEM, etc.)
Executing a production and shipping plan for the plant's scheduled tonnage for the week/month.
OSHA regulations and compliance (i.e.Confined Space, LOTOTO, Fall Protection, and others)

ADDITIONAL DETAILSPhysical RequirementsMust be able to lift and carry up to 50-75 lbs regularly.
Extensive climbing of ladders and stairs (sometimes up to 100 feet in elevation), standing, kneeling, stooping, and balancing on uneven terrain.
Frequent use of hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment.
Ability to wear all required PPE (hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, and sometimes full-body harnesses for fall protection).
TravelYou may be required to travel to other nearby plants or remote sites for specialized repairs or to assist during major overhauls.
Many roles require being reachable by telephone during off-hours for emergency maintenance.
Working ConditionsMany duties require outside assignments and periods of work in all weather conditions, hot, cold, wet, and dry And must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 lbs
The hiring range for this position is $40.00 -$75.00 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.
