Modernization ArchitectOverview
We are seeking an experienced Modernization Architect to lead the assessment, design, and modernization of complex enterprise applications and technology platforms. This individual will define pragmatic modernization strategies, translate legacy environments into scalable target-state architectures, and provide hands-on technical leadership throughout implementation.
The ideal candidate combines strong enterprise architecture fundamentals with practical experience modernizing legacy applications, integrating cloud-native services, and guiding engineering teams through large-scale technology transformation.
Responsibilities
- Assess existing application and technology landscapes, identifying technical debt, architectural constraints, dependencies, risks, and modernization opportunities.
- Define current-state and target-state architectures and develop actionable modernization roadmaps.
- Determine appropriate modernization approaches, including rehost, replatform, refactor, rearchitect, replace, and retire strategies.
- Architect scalable, resilient, secure solutions using modern cloud and distributed architecture patterns.
- Guide the decomposition and modernization of legacy or monolithic applications into modular, API-driven, event-driven, or microservices-based architectures.
- Develop architecture diagrams, reference architectures, decision records, integration patterns, and technical standards that engineering teams can implement.
- Partner with engineering, infrastructure, security, data, product, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Evaluate platforms, frameworks, and technologies and provide recommendations based on scalability, maintainability, security, cost, and time-to-value.
- Provide technical leadership throughout implementation, helping teams resolve complex architecture and integration challenges.
- Establish reusable modernization patterns and best practices that can be leveraged across applications and programs.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, solution architecture, enterprise architecture, or application modernization.
- Demonstrated experience leading enterprise application or platform modernization initiatives.
- Strong knowledge of at least one major cloud platform: AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Experience designing modern architectures using APIs, microservices, containers, serverless technologies, and/or event-driven patterns.
- Strong understanding of legacy application architectures and approaches for migrating or transforming workloads to modern platforms.
- Experience with integration patterns, REST APIs, messaging, and distributed systems.
- Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and DevOps practices.
- Ability to assess complex technology environments and translate findings into pragmatic architecture recommendations and modernization roadmaps.
- Strong client-facing communication skills with the ability to explain architectural decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Consulting or enterprise transformation experience.
- Experience with AWS modernization services, Azure modernization capabilities, or GCP application modernization services.
- Knowledge of domain-driven design, API-first architecture, event-driven architecture, and cloud-native design patterns.
- Experience modernizing data, integration, or messaging platforms in addition to applications.
- Cloud architecture certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or Google Professional Cloud Architect.
