Senior System Safety Engineer

Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) is a $151B multi-award contract designed to support direct orders by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and other Department of War (DoW) agencies. SHIELD supports national defense objectives by ensuring continuous, layered protection against air, missiles, space, cyber, and hybrid threats originating from any vector - land, sea, air, space, or cyberspace.

The Senior System Safety Engineer will support the SHIELD Project Office by partnering directly with program directors and product managers to ensure system safety across the full missile system lifecycle. This role supports multidisciplinary Integrated Product Teams in developing safe, mission-ready solutions that meet developmental, test, and operational objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform system safety engineering activities across all phases of missile system development, integration, test, production, and fielding
  • Conduct hazard analyses, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA)
  • Ensure compliance with MIL-STD-882E and other applicable DoD and Army safety standards
  • Develop and maintain Safety Assessment Reports (SARs), Safety Verification Plans, and Risk Acceptance documentation
  • Collaborate with design, test, and integration teams to incorporate safety requirements into system architecture and operational concepts
  • Support Safety Release processes for test events, including live-fire and flight testing
  • Interface with Army safety boards, review panels, and Joint Weapon Safety Working Groups.
  • Lead or support root cause analysis and corrective action planning for safety-related incidents and anomalies

Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required by Federal Law
  • Active Secret Clearance required
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field and 16+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong experience performing hazard analyses, including FTA, FMEA, and PHA
  • Experience applying MIL-STD-882E and other applicable DoD and Army safety standards
  • Experience developing and maintaining SARs, Safety Verification Plans, and Risk Acceptance documentation
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Safety Release processes for live-fire and flight test events
  • Experience leading root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions for safety-related incidents or anomalies
  • Ability to work directly with program directors, product managers, and multidisciplinary Integrated Product Teams
  • On-site presence and travel as required in support of program, test, and operational activities
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to influence system design through safety insight, including identifying non-obvious and cross-domain hazards
  • Hands-on experience with flight test or range safety, translating analysis into operational constraints and execution decisions
  • Experience integrating safety into model-based engineering or digital engineering environments to improve traceability and analysis efficiency
