Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for a Career Development Intern to join our Human Resources department. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, internship opportunity based out of our regional office located in Washington, D.C., with a hybrid work model. Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group is comprised of more than 1,700 Permanente physicians and nearly 300 staff professionals who come together to make a positive impact on the health and lives of more than 800,000 members in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Reporting to the Sr. HR Generalist, the Career Development Intern will support initiatives focused on building a transparent, equitable, and effective career pathing and career development program. This role provides exposure to talent development, workforce planning, and organizational design initiatives that help managers guide employees in their career growth within the organization. You will collaborate with HR professionals to conduct research, gather employee and manager feedback, and develop practical tools that support career development across the organization.

You can expect to:

  • Develop research summaries on career pathing best practices and benchmark peer organizations.
  • Prepare inventories and analyses of existing job titles, job descriptions, and role progression norms.
  • Partner with HR team members to organize roles into job families and career levels.
  • Provide support in drafting sample career pathways for both individual contributor and managerial career tracks.
  • Lead or assist with defining progression indicators such as skills, scope, impact, and readiness for advancement.
  • Oversee or support the development of career conversation toolkits, including manager guides, development planning worksheets, and FAQs.
  • Administer research activities by assisting with surveys, focus groups, and interview guides to gather employee and manager insights.
  • Support the design and implementation of pilot programs for career pathing and development tools, including communication materials and success metrics


What is required:
  • Must be a current student enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program in Human Resources, Business, Psychology, Education, Sociology, or a related field; Recent college graduates are ineligible for the internship program.
  • Must be available to work full-time, 40 hours a week, for a minimum of 12 weeks.
  • Previous experience with research, HR projects, or organizational development initiatives is a plus.
  • Interest or coursework related to employee development, career growth, workforce planning, or organizational design.
  • Experience with MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, or survey and research tools is preferred.
  • Strong written communication skills, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to synthesize complex information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively while maintaining professionalism and handling confidential information appropriately.
  • Interest in supporting talent development and building equitable career growth programs.
  • Must be able to commute to the Washington, D.C. regional office as needed.
  • Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia metropolitan area.
  • Must provide documentation of the Covid vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment. Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment.

The starting hourly rate for this position ranges from $20.00 to $25.00, which considers an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and prior job experience, training, market data, and other relevant factors. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
