The Student Academic Center (SAC) supports the academic success, persistence, and personal development of undergraduate students at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) by providing informed learning support and academic skill-building opportunities. Serving students across all schools and majors, SAC offers for-credit courses, academic coaching, peer-assisted study programs, and targeted interventions that promote effective learning strategies, self-regulation, and engagement with campus resources. In partnership with academic units and student support offices, SAC advances institutional goals related to student success, retention, and timely degree completion while serving as a campus-wide resource for students, families, and academic partners.

Job Summary

The Director provides strategic vision and campus-wide operational leadership for the Student Academic Center (SAC) and tutoring services at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). The Director ensures that the Center is a vibrant and safe environment that supports that supports student retention, persistence, and academic success. SAC represents the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) across the IUB schools, serving as a central hub for undergraduate academic student support.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Support.
  • Offers strategic, campus-wide leadership to advance excellence in the delivery, coordination, and visibility of academic support and tutoring services.
  • Works collaboratively with professional staff, campus partners, and academic units to design and implement high-impact academic support strategies that promote student success for undergraduates across all IUB schools.
  • Responsible for the development and oversight of courses, programs, and services that integrate evidence-based academic success strategies with belonging- and relationship-building experiences. These efforts are designed to foster a holistic developmental environment that supports both the academic and personal growth of undergraduate students.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of SAC.
  • Recruits, supervises, and trains professional staff, Academic Specialists, and administrative staff.
  • Oversees budget planning, financial management, and operational efficiency.
  • Oversees curricular development and coordination of courses with IUB schools.
  • Ensures that the tutoring center is a high-impact engine for student retention and social mobility.
  • Oversees campus-wide student tutoring services and residential tutoring.
  • Builds strong collaboration with academic units, schools, and institutional analytics.
  • Represents SAC on university committees, task forces, and working groups.
  • Engages with national networks to increase IU's visibility in supporting academic and tutoring services.
  • Collaborates with the IUB advising community and retention initiatives of VPUE leadership.
  • Represents SAC as a member of VPUE leadership team.
  • Provides vision and direction for SAC in alignment with campus priorities for providing academic resources and tutoring services to undergraduate students across schools.
  • Guides multi-unit initiatives, including retention interventions in collaboration with IUB schools.
  • Advises campus leadership on trends, challenges, and innovations in teaching, coaching, and tutoring.
  • Oversees the development of courses and initiatives to support student retention for students at risk.
  • Works with the VPUE leadership, the Director oversees the Early Alert data and translates those numbers into human outreach.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define educational resources methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority educational resources projects/initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase educational resources initiatives.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of resources for the area of educational resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale educational resources projects with wide audiences in support of academic initiatives.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
  • Researches and stays up to date on new industry educational resources standards, technologies, procedures, and metrics; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other educational resources leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to educational resources.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
Preferred
  • Terminal degree (Phd, EdD, JD) in higher education, student affairs, educational leadership, counseling or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 4 years in related field.
  • 1 year of management experience in related field.
Preferred
  • 3 years experience in academic administration and supervisory of student academic and tutoring services or an equivalent academic unit at a research-intensive or comprehensive university
  • 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Proven experinece in a leadership role within a center for student academic and tutoring services or equivalent academic unit.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$80,000.00 - $84,000.00 per year
