Department Information
Indiana University (IU) Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
Job Summary
- Provides specialized expertise into the analysis, development, and constant improvement of emergency response plans for various organizational levels.
- Leads, plans, implements, and coordinates the development, readiness, and resilience of the Emergency Operations Centers; ensures appropriate assignment of functions and participant training and exercises.
- Maintains a process for periodic assessment of natural, technological, and human hazards and threats, as well as develops strategies for mitigation.
- Tracks and reports to University and IU executive administration on campus administration and major unit preparations, as well as status of response efforts around specific incidents or events.
- Serves in a leadership/command role for emergency response operations, including incidents that impact normal campus operations to a high degree.
- Prepares and delivers instructional materials for training of emergency preparedness and response personnel.
- Provides educational information to campus faculty and staff.
QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required- Bachelor's degree in emergency management or a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required- 2 years of experience (preferably in emergency management).
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Preferred
- National or state professional certification in emergency management.
- Professional Emergency Manager.

Working Conditions / DemandsThe employee in this position will have excellent communication skills. This position is very active and requires moving about the workspace and ascending/descending stairs or ladders. The role requires frequently moving objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
