Job Description

The Controlled Environments Team seeks a motivated and responsible Greenhouse Technician to support research operations at a four-acre facility in Johnston, Iowa. The role will assist with routine greenhouse activities including seeding, pollinating, transplanting, watering, harvesting, tissue sampling, and data collection and handling. The technician will maintain a professional, clean, and safe work environment and meet compliance standards.

Schedule & Work Conditions:

• Hours: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday
• Driving required: No
• Work environment: Warm, humid greenhouse with pollen present year-round

Responsibilities:

• Perform daily greenhouse plant care, including assessing watering needs, harvesting, discarding plants, and seed processing and handling for corn, soybean, wheat, and other crops.
• Move carts of plants in and out of greenhouses and assist with experiments, data collection, and record maintenance.
• Operate threshing machinery safely as trained and per protocols. Follow safety and process protocols at all times.
• Perform routine sanitation tasks including discarding regulated material, destroying waste, cleaning pots and containers, and cleaning and sanitizing rooms.
• Maintain accurate plant and seed identity for large volumes of unique lines.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to follow standard operating and safety or ergonomics protocols with attention to detail.
• Strong communication and organizational skills. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as a team member with minimal supervision.
• Ability to stand and sit for extended periods and lift at least 30 lbs.

Preferred Skills:

• Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, biology, or related field, or three or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience safely operating machinery and adhering to protocols.
• Basic computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, with ability to learn internal research software.
