JOB SUMMARY
The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a ready-mix concrete batching facility. Under the direction of plant leadership, the Operator will learn to utilize computer-controlled systems to proportion raw materials into ready-mix trucks according to specific mix designs. This role is a blend of technical system monitoring and hands-on physical labor, requiring a high commitment to safety, quality control, and environmental compliance.
Beyond technical batching, this role serves as a central hub for plant activities-coordinating with dispatch for delivery schedules, maintaining precise material inventories, and performing routine inspections to ensure maximum production uptime. The Operator is expected to maintain an uncompromising focus on safety, environmental compliance, and product quality while fostering a professional relationship with drivers and customers.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate computer-controlled batching software to transfer materials from storage bins through weigh hoppers and into mixer trucks.
- Read and interpret computer-delivered orders to ensure the correct mix design is selected and the appropriate slump is achieved.
- Visually monitor loading areas and truck positioning to ensure efficient and mess-free product delivery.
- Print, record, and file delivery tickets; maintain accurate daily records of production statistics, fuel usage, and raw material inventory.
- Perform daily pre-shift and post-shift inspections of silos, weigh hoppers, conveyors, and plant structures to ensure operational readiness.
- Clean hoppers, mixers, and plant grounds to prevent material buildup; utilize hand tools for shoveling, sweeping, and washing equipment.
- Diagnose process interruptions and assist maintenance teams with minor repairs, such as replacing air valves or clearing stuck gates.
- Maintain strict compliance with OSHA and DOT regulations, as well as Martin Marietta's internal "Guardian Angel" safety culture.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance or clearing of equipment.
- Monitor dust collectors and water systems to ensure the plant operates within environmental permit guidelines.
- Monitor stockpiles and silo levels; assist management in ordering raw materials to prevent production delays.
- Communicate effectively with Dispatch to balance driver hours and ensure on-time delivery; provide customers with accurate product information when necessary.
- Safely operate mobile equipment, such as a front-end loader or skid steer, to maintain stockpiles or manage returned concrete (making "eco-blocks").
QUALIFICATIONSEducationHigh school diploma, GED, or relevant experience

ADDITIONAL DETAILSPhysical RequirementsYou must be able to lift and carry between 45 lbs and 50 lbs regularly.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders to heights up to 100 feet (e.g., to the top of silos or cement mixers).
Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, and reaching around equipment for maintenance and inspections.
Walking across steep or rough/uneven terrain throughout the yard.
Good hand-eye coordination is required to operate computer controls, hand controls, and foot pedals simultaneously.

Working ConditionsAll duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.
