Role Summary
This position is a senior-level Linux administration role within a government agency, responsible for managing and securing Linux systems across on-premises and cloud environments. The role involves operating, maintaining, and implementing security measures for enterprise Linux servers, primarily RedHat and Ubuntu, in both standard and Azure government settings. Candidates are expected to possess deep technical expertise in Linux systems, cloud integration, automation, and security compliance to support critical infrastructure and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Administer, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain RedHat and Ubuntu Server virtual machines and physical servers across production and non-production environments.
- Implement and uphold security hardening standards aligned with CIS benchmarks, utilizing tools such as Azure Defender for Cloud and Azure Policy.
- Manage system patching processes using Ubuntu Pro and APT, ensuring system stability and minimizing downtime through automated procedures.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash and PowerShell to streamline system operations across Linux and Azure platforms.
- Support Azure DevOps pipelines, source control, CI/CD workflows, and Docker deployments supporting Linux environments.
- Manage container workloads with Docker, including integration with Azure Key Vault for secrets management and vulnerability scanning via Azure Container Registry.
- Maintain identity and access management configurations, including SSSD, sudoers governance, and PAM settings, to secure Linux systems.
- Oversee storage and filesystem management, including LVM, XFS, and EXT4, ensuring proper partitioning and mount configurations following security best practices.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to support audit activities, logging, and compliance reporting, leveraging audited and Azure-native security tools.
Qualifications - 8+ years of practical Linux administration experience within enterprise or government environments, with a focus on Ubuntu Server LTS releases.
- Proven experience working with Linux in Azure cloud environments, including networking, Azure Key Vault, and managed identity integration.
- Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, pipelines, repositories, and CI/CD workflows involving Linux-based applications and containers.
- Proficiency in Docker, including secrets management, vulnerability scanning, and working outside of Kubernetes clusters.
- Advanced Bash scripting and working knowledge of PowerShell for cross-platform automation tasks.
- Solid understanding of security hardening techniques, such as SSH, UFW, AppArmor, systemd, and SSL/TLS certificate management.
- Ability to independently manage systems with minimal peer support, collaborating within interdisciplinary security and IT teams.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to fast-changing technical environments.
- Availability to work on-site full-time at the agency's Montgomery, Alabama office.
- Clearance to pass state and federal background checks for handling sensitive data.
Publishing Pay Range: $55.00 -$65.00 USD Hourly
This position is based in office and requires employee to work on-site.
